LadyLyric: I was given the name Lady J from an old friend in Brooklyn while I was recording, he just yelled “Lady J” I was like, “who’s that?” he said it was me. For a few years I went by Lady J, then as time went on everyone I worked with kept talking about my lyrics. I try to always conduct myself as a lady with class, knowledge of self worth and respect. I kept the Lady and claimed the lyrics the people had given me props for.
anCor: At what age did you start writing music? Who inspired you to
start writing?
LadyLyric: I was always writing poetry in elementary school, Then in middle school is where I started experimenting with singing some poetry I’d written. Something really came out of me naturally to write. I would say I was writing before I could even understand the concept of someone else inspiring me, it was just within me.
anCor: LadyLyric you sing as well correct? Why do you choose writing
music over singing?
LadyLyric: Yes, I love to sing. I have some classical training in opera and my mother says I have been singing since the age of 3. I still struggle with the decision whether I want to be a recording artist because I feel my elements of combining hip hop & r&b with opera is unique and my life experiences would make a strong album. At this time, my daughter is going to turn 2 years old and I personally can not commit to the life and obligations of a full time recording artist and be a committed wonderful wife and mother. They would have to change their lives to suit mine. I’ll write, keep my life as normal as possible and still enjoy that my music is being heard.
anCor: Who are a few singers that you have written for?
LadyLyric: I’ve been working on placements for the past few months more aggressively than before so that remains my focus. I’ve had the opportunity to write for a few singers but am still waiting on definite confirmations of what songs will work for what projects. So I’d rather wait to disclose the specifics when the paperwork is all complete..then throw a block party! But I am under contract to write for a #1 billboard artist’s project.
anCor: What makes a song writer outstanding in your eyes?
LadyLyric: Great question! They have to be able to make sense, have their own unique style, unrecycled melodies, great story telling, fresh concept or fresh twist on a concept, unpredictable note progression — meaning the song should take me to a place I’ve never felt. An outstanding songwriter should also be someone who takes the artists work to another level while still identifying with the core of who that artist is.
anCor: Do you have a favorite song writer? If so who would it be an why?
LadyLyric: MARIAH CAREY. Her musicality, voice, and expression is just inspiring. You just have to hear her to understand. She has written songs that have gotten me through times in my life. Songs that have made me happy, cry, and feel empowered. That’s music and I dream my music one day will have that affect on the world.
anCor: Do you feel song writers are over looked? If yes why?
LadyLyric: Sometimes yes but it’s not about the writer it’s about the song. When you take on the job of writing you realize that its for other people. Other people can have the shine. You have to be confident knowing that you produced that work of art. They represented it to the masses. It’s a joint effort.
anCor: What do you feel the r&b scene is missing?
LadyLyric: Ohh..what a soft spot this is hitting! I love R&B more than any other music (if I had to pick one style). It pains me to think of the current state R&B is in. I feel that R&B is missing the same equal opportunities that Pop music receives. It’s not right! Where are the days of power ballads, breakup joints, slow jams, deep conceptual songs that cried for you? There are just too many few right now.
anCor: Are you currently working with any producers? If so name a few…
LadyLyric: My producers are the core of my team. Without great production its challenging to arrive at a great finished product. They set the canvas with base colors, textures and shapes and I stroke the brush to form a clearer picture. Special shouts to my producers: Drawzilla, Youngfyre, Gun Productions, Danari, and Rockwilder for just being a great source of motivation for my career.
anCor: Words of wisdom:
LadyLyric: Be patient. Trust that you were born with this gift and that no man can take something away from you that God has already planned for you and your destiny. That doesn’t mean that you may now rest and do nothing. You have to put in those hours and those sleepless nights. DO NOT COP AN EGO, DO NOT DOWNLOAD AN EGO, DO NOT ADVERTISE YOUR EGO, it’s ugly! Make great music, let that speak for itself. Support your peers how you would like to be supported. Stay productive each day. Do your research on the music business and surround yourself with hard working talented humble people who have been where you would like to go.
Shout Outs: Shoutout to Ms. Chanell Bell for setting up this interview. Shout out to my friends, family, and supporters. Thank you for always believing in me. I’m never giving up!
